Find and compare schools across England

Good School Finder is a free tool for parents and carers choosing a school or planning a house move. Search any UK postcode to see the schools around it on a map, filter by age phase, and open any school for its full Ofsted inspection history. There are no accounts, no paywalls, and no features held back — everything is free to use.

Old and new Ofsted grades, explained

Ofsted changed how schools are graded in 2024. Older inspections gave a single overall grade — Outstanding, Good, Requires improvement or Inadequate. Newer inspections use a report card that grades several areas separately, with no single headline grade. The two systems measure different things in different ways, so a Good from 2018 and a report card from 2025 are not directly comparable. We show whichever applies to each school, clearly labelled, and never merge them into a fake overall grade.

The Good School Finder score

To let you compare a whole area at a glance, we add one unified Good School Finder score from 0–100, derived from whichever framework applies to a school. It is a ranking aid to help you shortlist — not an official Ofsted judgement — and we explain exactly how it is calculated on the About page. Because it is computed the same way for every school, it gives a consistent starting point; always read the school's full inspection before deciding.

How to use it

Type a postcode to explore the map, or pick a town to see a ranked guide to its primary and secondary schools. Each school shows its size, location and latest inspection. Remember that an inspection can be several years old, catchment areas change, and a grade never captures everything that matters about a school — use this as a starting point for your own visits and conversations.
